What is your favourite Night Time Nappy?

We all know the night-times require an absorbent nappy in order to keep your little’un dry until morning. Both disposable and real nappy users will often try a few different types and brands to find the perfect solution, and here we will provide a little insight into those we have tried and tested, and what works for us.

When our daughter was a young infant, stuffables were our night-time nappy of choice. We liked the fact that we could control the amount of absorbent layers we stuffed the nappy with, and our firm favourite was always the Wonderoo. Although the Wonderoo might not suit every child, for us it has always been a dream and seems to provide a really comfortable fit. We could always trust it to keep our daughter dry till morning.

However, as she grew and started doing bigger wee’s the stuffables just didn’t cut it for night-time use. So at around 8 months we switched to fitted nappies with a wrap during the night, and as we love to experiment we tried quite a few different ones! Bambinex Bamboo, MotherEase One-Size, MotherEase Sandys, Tots Bots Cotton Tots, Tots Bots Bamboozles, Flexi-Tots and Little Kiwi Quick Flips. There were certain fitted nappies which we used in the day, but knew they would not be absorbent enough for night use, such as the Bambinex Teddy and the Thirsties Fab Fitted. Bamboo or Cotton is the best bet for night use.

The Tots Bots Bamboozle and Cotton Tots work well with an extra booster layer, however now at 17 months the nappies are very wet by the morning. A snug fitting wrap ensures that the moisture doesnt leak, and a fleece liner keeps her bottom dry. Our wraps of choice for night time are usually fleece ones, we particularly like the Starbunz, Debbies Nappies Fleece Wraps and Fleece Soakers. These all provide maximum comfort and good containment. We also find the Blueberry Wraps to be an excellent night time choice.

However, the very best night time fitted nappies we have used are the Motherease Sandy’s and the Little Kiwi Quick Flip. Boy are these thirsty nappies! The Sandy’s in particular hold so much wetness, and parts of it are even still dry by morning! The downside is that is really slow drying, so you will need a few of them to keep the rotation going.

Feel free to contribute and let everyone know what nappies work (and what doesn’t work!) for you :)

The Credit Crunch and the Environment

The one constant in the news these days is the so called ‘credit crunch’ and its effects a recent report in the Telegraph referred to the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg’s difficulties with his shopping bill he has apparently had to stop buying organic to save money. Now I don’t know if this is strictly true because we know how newspapers like to find something to hang a story on. Anyway he is apparently struggling despite his income being in excess of 6 figures and his 1.3 million residence in Putney. But hold the food parcels just yet.

As darkening clouds gather on the economic horizon, Britons are reassessing their commitment to green living says the Telegraph. For the time being at least, saving the planet is taking second place to saving money. Sales of expensive organic foods are falling as climate change slips down the league table of daily concerns. So says the Telegraph’s Neil Tweedie. In my opinion this is rather missing the point, the Telegraph have some polls which they say indicate that the environment is less important to people now they are feeling the pinch. I wonder if many of the people they are talking about have any idea what its like to feel the pinch I rather doubt it. Have you ever met anybody who was polled for a newspaper? There never seems to be any indication of who they are and how they were sourced. As we all know if you pick the right biased sample you can prove anything you want.

But what about having a belief in your own health and wellbeing? Surely there are other things that people like the Cleggs could give up to save money is the amount they are saving really going to make a huge difference to them? Frankly if in an economic downturn the first thing you want to jettison is healthy living and caring for the environment we live in it doesn’t say much for your commitment does it.

According to writer Julie Birchall the whole environmental movement is just a bunch of public school boy’s intent on depriving the working classes of cheap flights and Costa Brava tans. Well I can tell you now that I certainly didn’t have a public school education but I only have to look at some of the environmental changes that have occurred in my lifetime to see that we have not looked after the earth as we should have. I don’t remember the amount of rubbish that you see thrown about everywhere for a start and every village and town is completely clogged with road traffic with all the fumes that produces. Certain illnesses have increased such as asthma and eczema and the causes have been ascribed to changes to the air quality that we breathe. Is that my imagination?

Since the Second World War, 80,000 chemicals have been developed to optimize our pesticides, cleaners, plastics, personal care products and industrial products. Many common cleaners contain neurotoxins, depress the nervous system, and threaten the healthy function of the liver and kidney.

When hazardous cleaning products are disposed of in landfills, the chemicals they contain can seep into groundwater. Cleaning chemicals that find their way down our drains also end up in our water system and others drift from the air of our homes into the air outside.

In the quest to have sparkling counter tops and whiter than white washing do we consider how much these items cost both in monetary and environmental terms? There are so many natural alternatives which are far cheaper. I would be very interested to take a peek into the shopping trolley of the people who can no longer afford to eat organic food because of the ‘credit crunch’ and check whether they have cut down on buying expensive multiple cleaning products . Or perhaps cut down on weekends away in foreign climes.

It’s surely a question of priorities and perhaps begs the question of why you bought organic initially.  For a healthier lifestyle or because it was the latest trend.

Nappies on a Budget

Most of us are feeling the pressure to save our pennies right now, and switching from disposables to reusable nappies is certainly a fantastic way to do that! Who wants to literally throw their money into the bin? Nope, not me!

However you decide to ‘Go Cloth’ you are looking at good savings over disposables. With disposable nappies costing around £930 (and rising) over the course of 2.5 years, you are left with absolutely nothing to show for it.

If you are a little extra strapped for cash right now it will be handy to know that there are some really cheap ways to nappy your baby, and I mean REALLY cheap!

The cheapest option is the trusty terries. You can stock up on 24 good quality Terry Squares for under £30, plus Nappi Nippas (£3.85 for 3) and you have the bulk of your stash. You would then require some waterproof covers, and a great budget option is the Fleece Wraps or Fleece Soakers by Debbies Nappies, starting at just £3.50. You will need around 3-4 of the covers to get you started. And there you have it, a complete starter stash for under £50!

However, if the idea of folding puts you off, the Diddy Diaper is a great shaped alternative to the flat terries. At just £4.99 each they are fantastic value for money. Again, you would need the Nappi Nippas and covers to complete the set, so 15 of the Diddy Diapers plus accessories would be a spend of under £90. Not bad eh? The downside of this option compared to the terry squares is that they would then need to be re-purchased later on in the second size. The Size 2 can be used as a one-size if necessary as the front can be folded down, however they would be very bulky on a small baby.

Another surprisingly economical option is the Birth-to-Potty Stuffables, such as the bumGenius. At £14.75 each the intial reaction might be ‘Ooh Heck, they are too expensive!’ and although the initial outlay may be more, they are designed to take you right through to potty training. So no bigger sizes need ever be purchased. They have rows of poppers down the front which allow you to adjust them in size as your baby grows, so when you stop to consider it, the savings really do make sense! The initial outlay will of course be more than the previous options, and 15 of the bumGenius nappies would cost around £220- compared to disposables this is still a mega saving!

Optional extras to these nappy stashes are liners, be it flushable or washable. Flushable liners usually come in rolls of 100 and are often used to make disposing of ’number twos’ easier, and washable fleece liners have the added benefit of keeping bottoms nice and dry, and being washed and reused along with your nappies.

The cost of washing works out at around £96.74 over the course of 2.5 years, and with any of the options listed, tumble drying is not essential as they all dry quickly on the line or on an airer.

Real Nappies do not need to be complicated, or expensive. Spending £5 here and £10 there on disposables seems harmless, but the cost really does add up! Real Nappies can be used for future children, saving you even more money, or they can be sold on after use on a pre-loved nappy site.  Definately something to think about huh!?

Washable Nappies Are Best for the Environment

Real nappies are up to 40% better for the environment than disposables; a new report from the government has stated today.

The key finding of the report shows that the environmental benefits are achieved by following simple washing guidelines like:

·         avoiding tumbledrying nappies,
·         using A-rated appliances and
·         washing in full loads at no more than 60 degrees

These are all measures recommended by nappy manufacturers and commonly used by parents .

The report highlights that unlike disposables, washable nappies put parents in control of the impact they have on the environment.

Parents using real nappies will also be financially better off.  It has long been known that real nappies save parents hundreds of pounds and now this
advice on washing methods, which are supported and promoted by the Real Nappy Campaign, will help reduce fuel bills too.  The savings in costs and for the
environment are even better when real nappies are used on a second child as manyfamilies do.

Laura Smith, mum to 8 month old Conner said:
“We already wash all the family laundry at lower temperatures and don’t use a tumble drier.  With increasing
energy bills I think more people are opting for energy efficient washing options and we’re delighted that this report backs up our decision to use washable nappies.”

An additional concern caused by disposable nappy use, is the pressure on UK landfill sites from the disposal of 690,000 tonnes of nappy waste each year; most of which
are landfilled.  This issue is not covered by the newly published report yet is still a major concern for consumers and only confirms the environmental benefits of
using washable nappies.

Jon Rolls of the Real Nappy Campaign stated:
“The findings of this report will confirm what many real nappy users already felt to be true; they will also alleviate the confusion caused by the earlier Environment Agency report.
The clear message to parents is that by using washable nappies sensibly they are opting for the most environmentally friendly nappy option, and saving themselves money.  Washable nappies in all shapes, sizes and designs are readily available through independent, online and high street retailers”

Jon Rolls added:
The Real Nappy Campaign clearly has an important ongoing role in continuing the promotion of washable nappies, as well as providing information on how to ensure their
environmental impact is minimised. We recognise that real nappy users occasionally find it convenient to use disposable nappies too and we are pleased to see that disposable manufacturers recognise the need to improve the environmental impact of their products.  Given the outcome of this report we look forward to constructive dialogue with the disposable industry about how we can help to further reduce the impact of disposables.
