How I got into cloth….

Monday, May 4th, 2009

When I had my first child my mother suggested I use real nappies, knowing how much I liked to get on board with green issues.  I had an immediate flash back to my child hood; her standing at a twin tub and my dad struggling with the complicated folding technique of terry squares and decided not to go down that route.  I only came across one person using cloth nappies when my son was a baby, and she was using terry squares with a mixed view point, satisfying my nagging doubt for opting for disposables. But then…

Four years later when my second was due, she again suggested cloth nappies and a number of other subliminal messages seemed to reach me…..  Magazine articles about saving the planet for our children, fashion shoots of yummy mummies with their babies in cloth nappies (not the terries I had envisaged!), cloth nappies included in baby / children’s catelogues, nappy laundering servies advertised: all a huge move on from when I was pregnant with my son.

I was in a quandary and decided to approach a web site, which appealed to me for advice on why and how.  I had a very straight forward response, which recommended amongst other things, purchasing a trial pack and selecting the nappy I most prefered.  This was the winner for me, and ensured I purchased the nappy, which was right for us.  The rest is history and here I am writing a blog for that very site!

My daughter is now six moths old, and the only regret I have is not using cloth nappies with my son, using real nappies has thankfully been nothing like that first flash back!
