Using Cloth Nappies out and about
Thursday, June 4th, 2009Cloth nappies out and about, is it possible? What about more than just for the day?
Yes it is possible - and not all that hard. It may take more planning at first but once you’ve done it for few times then it is very easy.
If you are only going out to the local shops, playgroup or visiting friends for the day then you just pack however many nappies you would normally use plus one or two extra in your baby bag. When you change your baby you can just rinse the nappy if facilities exist and pop the nappy into a waterproof nappy (or plastic) bag. If you can’t rinse the nappy don’t be put off by this -just place the nappy in the bag and remember to rinse the nappy once you get home. You can also make the bags yourself with any cover material.
For a longer trip you will need to work out a washing/drying method as well as storage. Many people travel overseas using cloth all along -as long as there’s a washing maching available or a local launderette. I even used cloth nappies on my son when at my parents summer cottage last summer -I opted for quick drying and easy to wash muslin squares -either folded into a pad or origami or use d them as a stuffing inside a pocket nappy. For covers I used wraps and wool soakers that only needed airing. The muslin squares I hand washed by the lake.
You shouldn’t store dirty nappies in a bag for more than few days though as they can get mouldy. If you travel for a longer period of time and don’t have access to a washing machine, disposable nappies or eco-disposable nappies are probably a better option.
But remember, don’t feel quilty if you’re not confident in using washable nappies when out -using real nappies even when at home will save you money and reduce rubbish a lot!

When we went away for a few days recently my DH was despairing that I was insisting on taking our nappy stash as opposed to using ’sposies- but I was determined, and it worked out just fine- I actually ended up taking way more nappies than we even needed!
I just stored the nappies in some plastic bags and popped them in the wash when we got home. As a certain Meerkat would say ….’Schimples’
I find if you use disposable liners, most of the mess is contained. Just flush away:)
