Daddy-Friendly Cloth Nappies
Friday, June 19th, 2009Dads usually fall into two categories- those who change nappies, and those who don’t. Yet even for those in the former category, you can still bet your bottom dollar they will have a comment to make when mummy announces she wants to’ Go Cloth’! If this comment happens to be a negative one, you may need too add some creative flair into your quest, and there are certain types of nappy which are much more likely to win daddy over! Read on…
Our own experiences of Daddy + Cloth have been pretty familiar I imagine- he knew I was determined to at least buy cloth nappies, and his accompanying comment was ”I know you won’t use them, it’ll just be a waste of money”. (Oh the irony!) So I kitted myself out, and started using them when Ari was about 2 weeks old. Almost everyday for the first month say that same comment being repeated as he glanced over the changing table, but nonetheless he did begin to change the nappies when he needed to, and I could see that he was slowly being swayed over to the ‘Cloth Side’!
Fast forward around 2 months and one could often find him out on the construction site singing the praises of cloth nappies to his work colleagues (whom I can only imagine were decidedly uninterested!) and oh did that make me chuckle (and ever so slightly smug at having proven him wrong!) Now fast forward 2 years and here he is co-managing a cloth nappy company! Love it!
But the fact of the matter is that sceptical daddies can be won over, and there are nappies that will help you to ensure that your partner will be! While those that will save them the most money is often a high priority, the key is finding the cloth nappy that will most closely resemble a disposable in terms of ease of use, and one that he can’t really get wrong! So here are some suggestions…

An All in One is as easy as it sounds, and as easy as it gets! Think of this nappy as a disposable, but one that gets washed and not thrown away! A microfibre core is built into the nappy, as is the waterproofing- so this nappy goes on and off in one piece. It also has a stay-dry fleece layer on the inside which keeps babies bottom nice and dry.
It has aplix fastening at the waist, which most dads prefer over poppers, as again it more closely resembles the fastening of a disposable!
The bumGenius AIO comes in 4 sizes for that perfect fit, and is a firm favourite with most daddies!

The Easyfit works in a very similar way to the bumGenius AIO, it has its absorbency and waterproofing built in, and goes on and off in one simple piece. The nappy comes in either bamboo or microfibre fluffle fibres (bamboo provides the most absorbency, but fluffle dries much faster).
The Easyfit fastens with Aplix for ease of use and maximum adjustability, but the main difference compared to the bumGenius is that this is a one-size nappy, so is designed to fit right from birth to potty training. Daddies will love this economical option!
A further difference is that unlike the bumGenius, the Easyfit does not have a fleece inner layer.

This is a gorgeous nappy which features a super soft organic cotton inner layer, with the waterproof layer built in. Like the Tots Bots, it is a one-size nappy so has rows of poppers down the front rise which you can adjust as your baby grows. These snaps only need to be changed a couple of times during infancy so they dont pose any complication issues!
This comes with poppered fastening, which has the benefit that curious infants can’t easily undo it.
The organic cotton in this nappy is very appealing to those parents who want to use natural fibres next to their babies skin.
There are of course many different options available, and some dads will prefer certain systems over others, but hopefully this gives you some pointers if you are yourself dealing with a sceptical partner!
If you have a story or experience to share about cloth nappying daddies please do share, we would love to hear from you!

My DH loves the BumGenius ones, he won’t use any of my others!
We use a big mix match of nappies and my partner always picks out certain ones to use and always ignores some of the others! He likes the tots bots and bumgenius ones, but never uses the close parent popin ones, never! lol
Poor Laura heard all about my super-reluctant partner. I ended up doing a 2week cloth trial while he was away on business, with the deal being that if he couldn’t smell them when he got back then we’d switch to cloth. He couldn’t, and B has been in cloth ever since. I second the BumGenius AIO recommendation. He’ll pretty much put her into anything now.
I am afraid on the rare occasions when mine changes them, he puts dd in a disposable! I have had loads left over from when we went full time cloth!
