Changing Nightmare!

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I have had my first nightmare experience changing my daughter in a public place, since starting to use real nappies……Read on….

I had met a couple of friends with older children at a local soft play so we could meet and have a chat over coffee whilst the kids enjoyed themselves, when a distinct face was pulled……  I made my way to the changing area, to be told there was no table to use to change and I would have to sit on the toilet and use my knee (!).  Ok I thought, I can manage a wet nappy on my knee, not sure I can deal with what I am expecting in this one though.  I was then told I could use the changing rooms, used for the pool, where changing tables are availabe.

Off I headed, and as expected the nappy was rather messy.  I started to change, and if I was using disposables the drama would have almost ended here, other than a hand washing dilemma as no sink in the vicinity of the table to wash my hands!  I needed a toilet to flush, if you get my drift here, and the nearest was some way away, again with nowhere to place Boo Boo whilst I dealt with the offending item….. Without sharing too much, the mess got everywhere, and was of the kind you only want to deal with in your own home!

I proceeded to walk back to my friends, handed Boo Boo over whilst carrying the rather messy item and then headed back to flush and wash.  I think everyone in that place knew what I was carrying (visible and whiffable!) and sympathy was all mine!

At first my head was shouting why do they not think about real nappy users, then I quickly realised, actually how many mothers can change a nappy that messy on their knee, and surely every mother needs to wash their hands after that????

Two mental notes have been made:

1 Never go to a changing facility without my pram!

2 Carry antibacterial wash just in case!

Needless to say my friends found it quite amusing, although empathised with the hand washing and changing on the knee issue!
