The Joys of self feeding!!!!

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Well it has happened, Boo Boo is now refusing food from a spoon unless in her hand, and at just under ten months this is proving a slight challenge.  Stubborn, independent children mine are, do not quite know where they get it from, although my husband and parents have a fair idea…….. Read on…

She very quickly realised that the food we were all eating was actually quite yummy, so to start off we gave her bread to dip into her delicious purees, home made by my good self.  Did not work, and for a small person, she has an amazing back throw…..  The progression then moved to give her small elements of finger food, whilst getting spoon fulls of puree in her mouth when she was concentrating on picking up her food…… Strength she also has and the spoon was batted away after a few days, covering me in puree on numerous occassions!

I have finally succumbed, much to Daddy’s frustration at the mess.  A large portion (approximately adult size!) is dished out, then small amounts added to her plate, attached to the table by a wonderful Tomme Tippe mat, which sticks to most plates / bowls.  She is getting much better, and can now grab at least four pieces of sweet corn at at time and get into her mouth; I do feel for her watching her struggle with small pieces of food!  Her motor skills are improving daily, which is amazing to watch, and she can now put a spoon full of food in her mouth, without getting every where and is trying to fill herself.

Needless to say, the padded high chair has gone to the depths of the garage and the Ikea easy clean £11 jobbie is out and serving the purpose very well.  I could do with a 2m square mat underneath her to catch her thrown food, which is never going to happen, as would effectively be the floor!  Feeding now takes about an hour….. Half an hour to eat and another half to clean up!

Nursery also proved a slight challenge with this, and for one day she ate nothing for lunch as offered from spoon, and all of her snacks and high tea.  The next day chicken and rice was given to her directly, and bless her she ate all with her fingers.  I explained to her key worker they were actually to blame, as I am replicating what they did with her brother, which was very amusing!  Sitting at the table with the other babies, some older, I could hear her shouting “No” to one trying to take her food !

The challenges and amazement at being a mother continues!
