The school holidays….
Saturday, September 5th, 2009I will be honest here and say that I was very nervous and dare I say a little apprehensive at the thought of being off work and entertaining two children for seven whole weeks….. Well read on for how I got on!
The first thing I did pre-holidays was get hold of all local activities and events and decided what my eldest would enjoy taking part. If there is one thing I cannot do is waste my days, and as such I really need to know what I am doing the night before, even if this is staying home and playing with lego all day! We found loads of activities and have been den building, creative recycling, teddy bear’s picnics, family sports days, dino adventures, pirates days…… And so on, all with a credit crunch and maternity pay to consider, so to say the least we have spent very little and had a fabulous time, the three of us!
With Boo Boo at nursery for a couple of days these last few weeks, it has also gave my son and I some one to one time, which has been fantastic and we have spent time in the local swimming pool, long hours making lego models and playing various action games with the charaters he loves. At this point I will share that a couple of the weeks before the holidays I was told I was embarassing and so uncool by my five year old son…….. His friends mothers were so much cooler apparently, although why was unclear; it may have been that they didn’t get up and dance at the front at a disco birthday party….. His dad asked him if I was a cool mammy now and his response was “awesome!”, as you can imagine this made my holidays all the more!
We started to compile a scrap book to remember our adventures, which was recommended by a friend. It is great to look back on our summer, and we will add to it each holidays without doubt. A memory to treasure and I would recommend everyone do this if they get the chance, as the kids love it too! I was actually amazed at what the local council arranges by way of activities and we have had so much fun taking part together, a great way to spend time.
Now don’t get me wrong we have had some challenges to say the least, the usual every mother faces at some point. I have said it before to friends and family, it is definitely easier being at work per se than being a full time mother, emotionally and physically at times! One thing is for sure, I look forward to every school holiday in the future and the great time to be had with my kids!

It sounds like a wonderful holiday!
I love the idea of the scrap book. Can’t wait to do something like that with MP.
I did it with a lad i looked after while i was at uni and he somehow seemed to get more out of the activities as he had to recall them later and think about what he had done as well as what he had really enjoyed and got out of it.
It is nice to hear that from someone about being a full time mum as occasionally people seem to be under the impression that being a SAHM means i want to duck out of life and sit on the sofa all day…..
What lovely memories you all will have to take you through the cold winter months ( not that the summer was particularly warm but at least it was light!)
