When nothing works…
Friday, October 16th, 2009My youngest one is now nearly two and he has been mainly in cloth since was born. In the beginning I used a muslin square folded in to a pad or an origami and it worked well together with a good wrap and they dried in a second! But as he grew older I wanted to have something a bit more absorbant and to be honest I was getting fed up with all the folding however fun it was in the beginning! Read on…
So I bought few fitted shaped nappies either with flap-out boosters or with pocket openings for stuffing but I still wasn’t satisfied. Maybe it was just me not being satidfied with all these gorgeous funky nappies? How come all the other real nappy users seemed to have perfect nappy stashes while I struggled to find a perfect nappy? And as there were so many nappies on the market that it almost became a struggle to decide which nappy to try next!
I then progressed into pocket and AIO nappies -when my son was born I thought I would never use them as I had decided to use only fitteds and wraps just like I had done with my previous two babies but as I had long time ago abandoned wraps and used wool pants now so why not give pockets a try as well? Fuzzi Bunz, BumGenius, Blueberry, several WAHM-made pockets, few to mention, found their way into our home to my delight -and to my husband’s despair! But none of them seemed to be THE nappy, they were all just ok. They all had the occasional leaks and some of them just didn’t seem to fit on my son perfectly. I don’t even remember now how I came across Bitti d’Lish nappies but ended up having one too and for months they seemed to do the job perfectly -they were cute, slim fitting, and absorbant! I went on to purchase lots of Ittis but today they are underperforming as well and I’m starting to get desperate as the only nappies that work (almost) perfectly for us is the BumGenius Organic AIO but they have to have the snaps or I can’t deal with them!
About a year ago I went on a nappy sewing course and found a fantastic pattern that fitted very well on my son but having three kids and a husband who works 50+ hours a week I just didn’t seem to have neither time nore energy to sew enough nappies to have enough on my stash. Now, 2 weeks ago our pc broke down and I noticed that I, surprise surpise, had more time in my hands as I didn’t spend as much time on the internet in the evenings (!) so I started sewing again, pockets and fitted nappies -maybe this time I’ll make enough nappies to see us through till potty training! I even sewed nappies for few friends and they were delighted so much so that they ordered more nappies from me!
Important though, with all the trouble and dissatisfaction with reusable nappies that I’ve had, it has never crossed my mind to switch to disposables but have persevered with cloth.
