What do Mums really Knead?
Tuesday, December 15th, 2009I think the best thing I have done throughout the process of being pregnant and having a baby has been talking to other people in the same position, or who have been through it.
But finding those people was quite a big leap of faith. I had to put myself out there and joined the local pregnancy Yoga groups, the local aqua-natal class and again when MP was born, the local mother and toddler group. Which, having been there yourselves, will know it can be daunting when everyone seems to know each other already! Read on….
And again you will know, being a mum can take its toll on you. You want to do your best and get to know your child, but lack of sleep and general day to day life as well as bringing up baby, is never a great combination.
So, it was refreshing to discover Urban Kneads, a new Mother and Baby centre, in the heart of Nottingham. The brain child of Suzy Young, she has opened, and is still in the process of developing, a new centre for all us mums – and dads too if they want to come along- with the hope of bringing her understanding and experience of health and holistic treatments to parents and babies across the Nottinghamshire county.

She offers a range of courses including aqua natal at a local pool, baby massage and
baby yoga, just for a start. Having offered many groups before, she previously had
a studio and treatment room in West bridgeford but decided to move to a large, two
story property in the centre of nottingham, making it really accessible from all
over the county. And of course, meaning that she can offer even more activities for
children and parents.
She plans to hold many different classes and is flexible in her approach,
understanding the pressures of motherhood and small babies! And of course, now
mothers can come together, meet, make friends and support each other.
Susie offers a range of treats and classes for mums to be, including pregnancy
massage, aqua natal and birthing classes, and will also be arranging for other
specialists to offer their services from the Urban Kneads centre.
I could quite happily go on about all that is on offer, but the best place to find out more is via the website. At the moment she has a special offer – the twelve days of baby christmas which is taster sessions for the various classes she is hoping to hold. I am also looking forward to the sling meets she has arranged to meet at the centre on a monthly basis.
She has also run various competitions, including a “best dressed baby” Halloween photo contest.
The winning baby? Well they won their mummy a lovely full body massage, and the runners up got the offer of a back neck and shoulder massage.
And yes, my little halloween kitten was a runner up, so I made the most of my prize a few weeks ago. It couldn’t have come at a better time since carting around a nearly-toddler who didn’t always want to walk was playing havoc with my shoulders. It was a lovely massage, where I felt properly looked after and was really impressed at the knowledge and more importantly, the understanding, Suzie has about all the issues of motherhood. I investigated the suggestion of a Hippy chick seat, and after an ebay bargain of £6, I am already feeling the difference from carrying MP side saddle, so to speak.
I am really hoping to be able to make plenty of visits to the centre, as I really love the idea of finding out more, doing more classes and meeting more people. A regular sling meet is planned for once a month, and as long as MP is light enough, I intend to make it.
So for all your parenting needs – head to Urban Kneads centre in Nottingham.
