Childbirth and Full Moons
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010Hoooooowwwwwl! Is that a wolf or a contracting woman I hear?!
So baby FYP the 2nd is due this Thursday, which I had determined as a day of a full moon some time ago. I remembered watching a tv programme years ago about the cycles of the moon and their effects on all aspects of nature and human society- including emergency services, police stations and hospital wards all being noticably busier under the influence of a full moon…. Read on…
This also included of course maternity wards, and I have since heard tell of many maternity wards increasing the number of staff they have on when the lunar phase is at a full moon. This fascinates me, and as such I am convinced that Thursday 27th will indeed be the date my labour sets in!…..I guess we’ll see!
The theory is that, just like the gravitational pull on the oceans, rivers, and even the rest of an animals bodily fluids, the pull is also felt on the water within the amniotic sac. During a full moon, this pull can put pressure on the sac, causing it to burst, but without the labour contractions that would cause the water to break in normal circumstances.
Now as Ive been having contractions on and off for about 2 weeks now, Im sure I cant be far off anyway, and perhaps this gravitational pull will push things that bit further! Will be sure to keep you posted of course!
So, has anyone else felt this occurrence and given birth on a full moon? Or have any lunar cycle tales to tell?!

Did it work? My mother is a midwife and noticed no increased levels of birth or labour activity at the delivery suite on Thursday… and she told me the same before I had Molly. Didn’t stop me rubbing my belly at the full moon just before she was due! xxx
Nope! Still here!
Good Luck Laura, we are all thinking of you!!! xxx
