Night-Time Nappy Quest!
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010I’ve been searching for a reliable night-time nappy for my 12 month old baby girl after finding that none of my stash were holding up to the job of a sleeping heavy-wetter. Having searched around, I picked three different nappies and here’s how I got on….
BAMBOOTY - EASY NIGHTS
When the Bambooty first arrived I was surprised how slim it was. I thought that this was great in terms of less bulk between the legs (I seem to find night-nappies to be huge!) but I did wonder how it would hold up against leakage.
The next thing that strikes you with this nappy is all the layers of attached boosters! There are four sized bamboo fleece and organic cotton mix boosters, each with hidden microfibre for super-absorbency. They simply flap down over each other and elasticated leak guards at each side help to hold them in place and prevent leaks. I love how soft the boosters feel, and they have remained so after several washes now. Drying time is pretty good, you can peg the flaps in a way that lets the air get to each of them which does speed things along nicely.
This is a sized nappy. I bought the large for my 12 month old which fits well, however I don’t feel that it will last a huge amount of time before she grows out of it. An XL is available for larger babies and toddlers though which may be a good option. I would recommend, if in doubt, get the next size up.
I have had some good dry nights with this nappy, but I have also had a couple of leaks come the morning which has been disapointing. I wonder if I had the bigger size it would hold up better. I will continue to use this nappy for the time being in the hope that the couple of bad nights that I have had with it were just teething problems!
WONDEROO - STUFFABLE POCKET V2
I think my favourite, and so far has held up to the night-time deluge the best.
The inserts comprise of a smaller micro-terry which is quick to absorb and draw liquid down to the main bamboo insert. The bamboo is a large rectangle which you fold and popper together, you then popper the two inserts together. Handily, there is a pink popper for a girl and a blue for a boy which allows you to position the micro-terry in the optimum absorbent position for your baby. I really liked how I could seperate the two and how the bamboo folded out for drying which made this nappy the quickest drying of the three.
The shell of the Wonderoo is nothing fancy, but it is functional. It is lovely and soft next to baby’s skin and fits nicely around the legs, this new version is also anti-wicking. Popper adjustment allowed me to get a good fit and although this is a big nappy when on, I felt she was comfortable which is the main thing. This is a birth to potty nappy which only makes me wish I had discovered it sooner!
This nappy has kept my baby dry each night I have tested it. It even held up extremely well during the day after only one pre-wash. It definitely feels like the best fit and comfort of the three nappies that I have tried, but it is such a relief to find a nappy that I can be confident to keep my daughter dry all night and so hopefully she wont wake up even earlier than usual due to feeling wet. If I had the choice each night, this would be the nappy I would reach for.
ISSY BEAR V2 - NIGHT
My first thoughts about this birth-to-potty stuffable nappy was how enormous the inserts were! There are two generously sized bamboo and microfibre inserts that popper together to form a super-absorbent pad, you really can’t imagine ever needing more absorbency than this!
The downside to this is the added bulk and also the increased drying time, this was the slowest drying of the three nappies. I did however feel that although bulky, this nappy did fit comfortably and the super soft layer of suedecloth next to my baby’s skin felt lovely and soft and kept the wet away from her skin well.
I did have a couple of gripes with this nappy though. The pocket for stuffing has quite a small hole which I found made putting the huge inserts in much fiddlier than any other stuffable I have used. The pocket is also held closed by a tab of velcro which should be able to be folded away from your baby’s skin to stop any rubbing. This was possible and I have had no issues with rubbing, however I did find it a real fiddle to get right each time I used it and also, you have to remember to un-velcro the tab before washing so that the inserts can come out in the machine.
Again, I have had a little bit of a mixed result with this nappy. On the whole it has held up well and kept her dry until she wakes but there has been a couple of nights now where there has been some leakage come morning. I will also persevere with this nappy as I feel that it has all the makings of being a great night-timer and perhaps it just requires many many pre-washes!
So I feel like my search for the prefect night nappy has resulted in finding a gem in the Wonderoo, definitely a nappy worth trying if you haven’t done so already. I still feel frustrated by how difficult it seems to be to find real nappies that hold up to extra wetness. I cannot think that my baby is unusual in her level of wetting. I would say that she was a reasonably heavy wetter but then all babies as they get older are going to increase their fluid outflow! I am finding it extremely frustrating to find that many of my daytime nappies and ones that previously worked well at night, now seem to be redundant, particularly when many of them are supposed to be birth-to-potty. My daughter drinks plenty of water throughout the day as well as her milk which is something I encourage to help keep her healthy and I certainly don’t want to be having to limit her fluid intake because the nappies aren’t up to the job!
If anyone out there has any interesting experiences or nappy tips or recommendations for this subject, please let us know!

Completely with you there on the Wonderoo! They were our night time nappy with choice with Ari, and the V2 proves to be just as effective, if not more so. Glad you found the perfect solution!
Perhaps a fitted nappy with a wool cover? The PUL vastly reduced breathability which means that nappies soak through a lot quicker. I don’t tend to use PUL nappies at night for this reason.
I’ve reviewed some excellent night nappies, however. The very best we’ve ever used are Wee Notions Night Notions and Holden’s Landing Bedbugs. You can also try fleece soakers if you’re not a fan of lanolising wool - cheeks and cherries have some LUSH pumpkin pants fleece soakers in.
I do agree, though, wonderoos are excellent nappies for night time use if you’re a PUL fan x
I am using Sandys and i haven’t had leaks but I hate the smell in the morning…
We use Tots Bots Bamboozles Stretchy at night, and we’ve not had any issues at all with them, my son is 3 months old, and a mammoth wetter, who is also teething at the moment so we’ve had a few nights of upset stomachs and the nappies have held up really well. We use them with a fleece wrap and we just use the bamboo booster that comes with it with an added micro fibre booster for dryness, we’ve also just switched to a fleece liner, and Henry always wakes up with dry skin even when the nappy is filled with wee!
My only complaint is how bulky this makes the nappy, however, it’s a birth to potty nappy, so I’m hoping that as he grows we obviously won’t need to popper it down so it will seem less bulky!
However, saying all that, I’m never adverse to trying new nappies, so I may check out the Wonderoo, just to be thorough of course!
