Do Compostable Items Disappear in the Bin?
Do you buy nappies (or any other items for that matter) with biodegradable content in the hope that your contribution to landfill sites will be lessened? Well if so, I am afraid that that belief is inaccurate, and this is why….

Have to admit this is kind of cool…
Six years ago Chris Ebejer designed a way to help parents become aware if their baby overheats- the BabyGlow is a cotton sleep suit with heat sensitive molecules embedded in the ink pigments. When a babies temperature rises above 37°c, the colour of the sleepsuit changes from pink/blue to white- thus alerting parents a potential health issue with the child. Read more…

Special Keepsakes
Alice Evans has recently welcomed her sixth grandchild, Emily, into the world. When Alice was young, money was tight, and sentimentalism, as her mother called it, was scrubbed out of her hair and washed down the plughole every week. All this means that, bar a few faded photographs, Alice doesn’t have much in the way of keepsakes from the time her own children were babies. Now she has to rely on her memory, which is starting to fog around the edges. Sometimes she can’t even tell which of her children is which from her baby photographs.

How do I get it clean????
I am definitely not adverse to mess, although I do like to be able to get things clean, for hygene, never mind asthetics! This is where weaning poses yet another question …… What equipment do you use?

The Weaning Challenge
What a dilemma weaning seems to pose every mother, myself included!!! When, how, what, the questions are endless and everyone has the best idea and solution.
Every new mother is told the World Health Authority recommends waiting until babies are six months, which then becomes the Holy Grail of dates. Why I asked??? The world standard and delaying the use of possible contanimated water was the answer given. Puree or baby lead??? The challenge continued…….

What books to read????
Two things have happended to me recently:
1. Someone highlighted that they thought I read to many books. Although I am a clear activist I do read a lot of books in general. When I was expecting my first baby, I read a lot of parenting books, as being a mother seemed to me a huge mine field and I wanted to start off with some basic knowledge; at this point I didn’t even know babies cried because they were hungry, wrong temperature, had a pain or needed their nappy changed…..
2. An expectant mother asked what books I thought she should read.
Both happened within a short space of time, and got me thinking about the whole subject of parenting. My answer to the first point was very clear, I like having reference points to dip in and answer any questions I have on any subject, and this is my perogative.
My answer to the second was a straight forward no.
After thinking about it, although I have read a number of books, I use the information as a starting point and use my own judgement as to what works for us in our family. Being a parent does not and cannot come with a manual as we and our children are all different. You have to do what is best for you and yours, and not get too hung up about what you or your baby should do.
Read books that are recommended or you like the look of, and then form your own opinions. Go with the flow and learn from each other is my philosophy, both parent and child……… Having said that, it doesn’t stop me stressing about countless elements of motherhood, although second time round has been easier so far!

Half term mobility…..
My life has just taken a new turn…… My seven month daughter is now mobile, and can get across my living room in less than ten seconds, in a sort of commando roll, stright to her four year old brother and his toys.
